In the alpine village of Vals, Peter Zumthor designed a modernist construction known as Therme Vals Spa; opened to the public in 1996. The architect was principally inspired by "The Subject of Phenomenology" by Martin Heidegger, whose theory establishes experiences captured through the five senses.

In it Zumthor reveals that the original idea for Therme Vals was to hollow out the space upon which it stands. "It was a quarry and then it became more of a construction site.
